I agree with you that they'll probably sent them off on an Outbound Flight sort of thing, rather than kill the two biggest heroes of the series. I think theories to the contrary are head-cannon territory. In fact, in ROTJ we're led to believe that the entire Rebel fleet is debarking from a central location to engage the Death Star II. Though it's possible that after the Battle of Yavin the Rebellion decided not to place all their eggs in one geographic basket, it's certainly never alluded to in the movies. I suppose it's possible that he didn't know of the other secret Rebel base, but I'm fairly confident that from a narrative point of view, we as the audience are supposed to find him reliable in this regard. In ANH, it's even specifically stated by Tarkin that in destroying Yavin IV, they will be ending the Rebellion. I don't really think we're ever given any reason to assume that there are more active members of the Rebellion than what's seen on-screen.
